On August 10th, 2026, a devastating earthquake struck Colombia — and my hometown of Cali, Colombia was hit the hardest.
Cali is not just where I was born. It's where my parents live. Where my family is. Where my roots run deepest. And right now, it is suffering in ways that are difficult to put into words. Here is what we know about my family: My parents' building has been deemed structurally stable, but the stairs have separated from the walls. Their front door is jammed, and we have not been able to get inside. We do not yet know the full condition of everything they have.
The streets around their home tell a different story. Apartment complexes throughout the neighborhood have been declared uninhabitable and will be demolished. My cousin, who lives just around the corner in the same complex, has lost everything. The building next to hers will be torn down. Residents have been asked to evacuate if they are able to leave safely. My parents are safe and here with me,. but what they return to and what it will take to rebuild? It is all still unknown.
